August Wrap-Up!

Kids of Appetite by David Arnold

My rating: 2/5 Stars

kids of appetite

I was so tempted to put this book down so many times. In fact, I did actually put this book down many times but I hate leaving books unfinished so I persisted.

Kids of Appetite had so much potential. The story and the characters could have really made for a spectacular read. However, I felt the execution of this story telling fell short. David Arnold’s writing was just so painfully over the top and ridiculously cheesy. I would find myself reading what could have potentially been a great scene, and I would think to myself this would be so much better if (insert author’s name) wrote it.

Even though I didn’t enjoy this book, I did like this quote: “We are all part of the same story, each of us different chapters. We may not have the power to choose setting or plot, but we can choose what kind of character we want to be.”

Always and Forever, Lara Jean by Jenny Han

My rating: 4/5 stars

always and forever lara jean

For me, this was the post perfect ending to Lara Jean’s story! Jenny Han couldn’t have done a better job with this one. I don’t read a lot of series but this is definitely one of my favourites by far!

Dear Ijeawele, A Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

My rating: 4/5 stars

a feminist manifesto

“Your feminist premise should be: I matter. I matter equally. Not “if only.” Not “as long as.” I matter equally. Full stop.”

This was a very important read. A quick one too. In less than 70 pages, Chimamanda is able to explain why feminism is important; and ultimately how to exist unapologetically.

Everyone can benefit from reading this book!

The Lover’s Dictionary by David Levithan

My rating: 5/5 stars

the lover's dictionary

This was another quick read. I really enjoyed reading this book, it’s so unique but I  can also see how it might not be for everyone. It’s literally what it says it is – a Lover’s Dictionary.

The main character in the story gives us lots of tiny glimpse’s into the ups, downs and in-betweens of his romantic relationship. The entire book is written in the format of a dictionary; starting with the letter ‘a’ and ending with the letter ‘z’. It reads almost like poetry but not quite. Some pages consist of multiple paragraphs, and other pages, a single sentence.

I found it to be really interesting and for me the concept was unlike anything I’d ever read before.

Everyone We’ve Been by Sarah Everett

My rating: 4.5/5 Stars

everyone weve been

“You take the worst thing that’s ever happened to you and you tell it any way you want to. You make it silly. You reclaim it. The point is that it’s yours. And everything that happens to you, not just the bad stuff, Make it whatever the hell you want it to be.”

This book has major ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind‘, however Sarah Everett definitely puts her own spin on it! I loved it from beginning to end, never wanted to put this book down!

And that’s it for August folks!
