Book Reviews

September Wrap-Up 2018

Another month of reading only two books and oddly enough, I’m okay with that.

In Some Other World, Maybe by Shari Goldhagen

My rating: 4.5/5 stars

You ever think about all the people you’ve ever met? The friends you’ve had. Past romantic relationships. Career decisions. The way people come in and out of our lives. What could have been? What could still be?
Well this book makes you think a lot about all that. About how everything changes but also how some things stay the same. About how you can still love people even if they are no longer in your life. Human interaction. Human connection. Actions and consequences. Emotions.
It was like a really long story made up of lots of tiny stories. We followed Adam, Phoebe, Sharon & Oliver – from high school, to university, their 20s & 30s. How sometimes their lives were interconnected without them ever even knowing.
This was not a book that was previously on my reading list or an author that I already knew. It was a completely random pick and I’m glad because I absolutely enjoyed it!

Obsidio (The Illuminae Files #3) by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

My rating: 4/5 stars

THE END OF AN INTERGALACTIC ERA! What a ride!
Like the other two books in the series, I found the start to be a bit slow. But things always start to pick up in the middle & once you hit those last 200 pages you already know there’s no putting it down.
Again I continue to be amazed by the writing style of this series. It’s what makes it so unique and unfortunately also what can make it confusing for some people. (It was definitely very confusing for me when I read the first book Illuminae).
I do feel like some of the “plot twists” weren’t as shocking this time around, just because we’ve kind of experienced similar twists in the previous 2 books and at this point, we kind of know what to expect.
I’m not sure how to summarize the storyline without revealing spoilers but basically: this is the third and final story about the war against BeiTech Industries! There’s more death and savagery, basically no f*cks were given. So much sacrifice made by our young heroes. But what a freaking ride!
I’m so sad to see it all come to an end. Kady Grant, Ezra Mason, Hannah Donnelly, Nik Malikova, Asha Grant and Rhys Lindstorm – you will all be missed!
