Gone Girl meets 13 Reasons Why ?
When Alicia returns home to find her husband dead, she is distraught. An early investigation leads police to consider Alicia the primary suspect in her husband’s death but it becomes evident that there is much more to this murder mystery than meets the eye.
This was an interesting quick read. Constantly evolving twists & turns keep you hooked throughout the story. There were some things that didn’t quite add up for me but overall a good mystery/thriller.
The Refugees by Viet Thanh Nguyen
My rating: 2.5/5 stars
“It was a trivial secret, but one I would remember as vividly as my feeling that while some people are haunted by the dead, others are haunted by the living.”
A collection of stories about the life of Vietnamese refugees. Some stories were beautiful & sweet & others were much less interesting.
My favourites were definitely:
The Other Man
I’d Love You to Want Me
Someone Else Besides You
Been Here All Along by Sandy Hall
My rating: 3/5 stars
SO CUTE!!
Gideon realizes he’s gay when he suddenly begins to develop feelings for his bi best friend Kyle who lives next door. Kyle has a girlfriend Ruby but eventually starts to question whether there could be something more between himself & Gideon.
This was such a cute story about friendship and romance, sprinkled with all the typical high school drama to spice things up of course. A very quick read too!
The Alice Network by Kate Quinn
My rating: 4/5 stars
“No one let’s girls do anything. Not spend our own money, sell our own things or plan our own lives.”
In 1915, 22 year old Evelyn Gardiner is tired of working a mundane clerk job. When she’s approached by Captain Cameron and offered the opportunity to become a spy and save her country she can’t say yes fast enough!
In 1947, 19 year old Charlie St Clair is knocked up and is sent off by her parents to secretly get rid of her “little problem”. However, unbeknownst to her parents, she decides to take a detour to find her cousin Rose who seems to have disappeared during the end of the last war. Her only lead is a lady called Evelyn Gardiner.
The Alice Network is a magnificent story about brave, independent, intelligent women who are not afraid to defy the status quo. Seeing Eve and Charlie’s worlds intersect across time periods was thrilling and had me on the edge of my seat. Kate Quinn is a brilliant writer and stories like this are the reason why Historical Fiction is one of my favourite genres!
